Angle Audio Discrete Phono Stage with Virtual Battery

Discrete Phono Stage with Virtual Battery

This is a high-end, phono preamp with a high sensitivity, very low noise, discrete transistor input stage.

As with all Angle Audio phono stages, this preamp allows you to connect your turntable to the Aux or similar line level input on your amplifier.

This high quality phono stage is available for all cartridge types although the design of the Discrete Phono Stage is particularly suited for use with moving coil cartridges as it is able to provide the very high gains required whilst minimising noise levels.

This Discrete Phono Stage uses just 3 high quality power transistors for each input stage resulting in very low noise levels. Power transistors are used as they can be biased in their linear region (where the input signals are all amplified equally) and the very small input signal from your cartridge will not cause them to stray from that region, giving you pure, undistorted sound. Additionally, the discrete bipolar junction transistor input stage imbues a pure, realistic sound and extracts the most from your cartridge, this sound just can't be achieved in Integrated Circuit based designs.

The transistor input stage has dedicated, specific power supply filtering circuits helping to ensure excellent noise performance. This is in addition to our three stage power supply filtering that’s designed to give industry leading power supply noise suppression.

This unit also comes with our new Virtual Battery 3 (VB 3) functionality that provides a very high capacity internal rechargeable battery that powers the unit, this minimises mains power noise and the battery's high instantaneous current capability also improves dynamic performance . The high capacity battery will power the preamplifier for over 24 hours and with VB 3 the unit detects if the battery is getting low and automatically switches to mains power so you can keep on enjoying your music.

The amp has full RIAA equalisation and will support moving magnet/high output moving coil cartridges or low output MC cartridges, please let us know which version you require.

Here's one review from a happy customer:

"What I am after from the Angle Discrete VB is what the Trilogy does. That is my benchmark. It’s asking an awful lot for a £599 phono stage to match a £895 stage, but I think the virtual battery and its DC architecture is a great advantage and a head-start.

Immediately I got that familiar warmth that I’m after. I’m also immediately aware that there is no concession toward a middle-of-the-road presentation, this is for purists that want the whole truth. The soundstage isn’t out of the room, but is the width of the room with everything distinctly located, not only left to right, but forward and back too. I find the light and shade that the Trilogy does so well is taken to even greater heights with the Angle and playing Ryan Adams live at Carnegie Hall is astonishing in its detail and atmosphere, frankly the best I have ever heard it. The sound of the odd cough from the audience is somewhere in the air behind me and it strikes me that this is where this phono stage excels – in gentle music.  Again it is most definitely a listener’s phono stage rather than a party goer’s phono stage.

When things get more frantic, I find that the soundstage contracts somewhat and things can pull in a little bit. Strangely, drums and cymbals recede more than anything else and can almost disappear, and rhythm becomes a little vague, almost as if it’s running out of puff.  The Trilogy does this too, but not to the same degree. It is also true that the Angle is very revealing of recording quality and this may be a symptom of the recording process, but there is definitely confusion in there when things get loud. However, that is the only raised eyebrow. Bass isn’t particularly low, but it is totally appropriate. Piano is always exceptional. Always the Discrete VB does music over ‘hifi’ness every time and I love it for that Vocals are wonderful and even better than the Lehmann. The size of the soundstage is wide enough, not as wide as the Trilogy, but the depth to the soundstage is the best I have ever heard. The impossibly quiet whispers and delicacy is also the best I have ever heard, and as this is the type of music I listen to far more than any other, it suits me very well."

Angle Audio products have been reviewed on various internet forums and our Audiophile phono stages have been formally reviewed by HiFi World Magazine on two occasions, we are proud of the numerous positive comments we receive:

"I purchased a MM and an MC just over a year and a half ago... they both blew away my Project SE II (better sound stage more clarity ) , I sold my SE II very quickly afterwards, ......and love them to bits."  (Vinyl engine user)
